Taxes & Affordability
Property taxes in Connecticut are out of control and rising fast. We can’t sustain this outdated model of funding our communities, and our local economy is being crushed by the lack of options to fund services without squeezing property owners. It’s time for real tax reform that gives cities like Torrington better options for funding.
Ed will work collaboratively in Hartford to implement real solutions like different tax rates for commercial/industrial and residential, options for local sales tax instead of property tax, and returning restaurant taxes collected in Torrington back to Torrington without the state taking a cut. Our residents and business owners work hard, and it’s time to create a tax system that distributes the costs and stops choking our local economy.
Along with new, locally controlled revenue options, it’s time for the State of Connecticut to take a hard look at tax cuts and credits. Our state is on stronger financial footing than it has been in decades, and we have real options to deliver tax relief for our residents and businesses without slashing essential services. For example, Ed will advocate for tax for home improvements in rental housing and for further reductions in the car tax as a precursor to its eventual elimination.
Ed will also introduce a bill to give major tax credits to very small businesses like those in our downtown. If a business is the only one owned & operated by a particular owner, and that business has 10 employees or fewer, we ought to slash their taxes and give them room to thrive. Locally owned small businesses are the key to a thriving local economy, and it’s time for the State of Connecticut to support our downtown.
